Email 1: Goals
It’s -11degrees below zero here in Idaho and I’m thinking of my trip to Tampa, FL recently to visit body weight exercise pro Matt Furey, how I miss the Florida warmth.
My daughter and I are going snow-boarding this Saturday at a local resort for some real cold-weather fun. The last trip to Targhee ski resort in Alta, Wyoming, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains near where we live, was very interesting; there was zero visibility, it was snowing and I had no goggles
After a fast ride to the top on a state-of-the-art super quad lift I managed to fall off at the unloading ramp. See, the chair suddenly slows down with a braking so the riders can safely exit and slip comfortably and confidently to the beckoning slopes below. But, if you try to prepare your self too soon by adjusting your weight forward just at the moment the operator hits the brake, you fall off. After 13 years of successful skiing and having my photos in Ski magazines for aerial acrobatics and never having fallen off a ski lift, it was rather embarrassing as the chair continued over my head as I scampered back up the unloading ramp as a hand full of skiers stood watching in amusement. Fun, live and learn.
Next came the blinding conditions in which I couldn’t see a thing in front of me. So, if I stopped I couldn’t tell as I continued to slip until I hit the steep slope on the left. No idea I was even moving One guy told me his wife got a case of vertigo up there
Anyway, I had a blast with the powder conditions It is a sport I’ll continue to enjoy. Next time I’ll have goggles. I tell you this story to get you motivated. Despite my having had only 4 trips to the mountain previously snow boarding, I kept my attitude positive and my wits about me as I conquered an experts-only run - blinded
You too can accomplish your goals if you just have hope. I know this is true. The future is what ever you make it in your mind. But remember, you must take action to really get anywhere. It might be that you can’t see the end from the beginning, but that is where the adrenaline rush comes from. That’s what makes life worth living - just do it!

Email 2: Getting Started
I get asked about once a week what is the best way to start weight vest training. The answer is, first contact your physician. Next, always start light! If you have never used a weight vest for walking or running you need to start with as little as 5 lbs for the first 2-3 workouts and add 5 about every week or week and a half. The principle is the same as any weight bearing exercise - increase the weight as your body adapts. It is common for a person to get their weight vest and immediately load it up to the Max. Because your legs are stronger than the trapezius group of muscles, it is simply a matter of allowing the traps to adapt. Over time they will.
A good tip for walkers is to go easy, and relax the shoulders. Some people walk with a constant shrug which can quickly fatique the traps. This is why it is important to start with only 5 lbs for the first few training sessions. Do the traps ever handle big weight? You bet! I have talked to women who handle 75 lb vests and specifically a woman 5'2" 120 lbs using a 100 lb vest!!
Start light, work up gradually. The body does adapt if nutrition, rest and exercise are sufficient.

Email 3: Maintenance
I get asked how to keep V-Max weight vests clean. The answer is simple. Let me first explain our concept. We use a lot of velcro type fasteners, and 1000D Cordura nylon in our vests. This is why we don’t want you to wash them in the washer. Velcro hooks (the scratchy part) likes to cling to everything. It will come out of the washer full of lint which reduces the holding power of Velcro. That’s one reason. The second reason is because of the 1000D Cordura nylon which we coat with a water-resistant material on the inside to help prevent moisture from entering the vest and contacting the foam padding.
So, what do we recommend for cleaning? Hand washing. It is very simple and is preferable anyway. You take off your vest, lay it on a flat surface inside up, you can keep the weight in the vest. You can do a couple things; first, you can use handy wipes ( an antibacterial cloth wipe, any brand will work and they’re cheap), just wipe it down, takes about 30 seconds, or you can simply use mild detergent and water in a cloth or sponge to hand wash it periodically. I personally wash mine once a week. I open it and lay it down so the inside is pointing up, then I grab a damp sponge or cloth and wipe it down and let it air dry. I have no problems this way.
The nice thing about V-Max vests, they are extremely durable and keep their shape. Like a high-quality back pack, it is better to hand wash it and keep it lasting years.
Here’s a good antibacterial spray you can make that lasts forever. Pour 1 cup of water into a spray bottle. Add 20 drops of lavender essential oil and shake to blend. Spray on the weight vest inside surface after workout leave on for 15 minutes, rinse with warm water in a sponge or cloth, or let air dry .

Email 4: Short vs. Long
People ask me what is better, short or long vests. V-Max long vests are technically short vests because they are only 3" longer than the short vest and most of the weight is located high on the torso giving a fulcrum effect. The fulcrum effect is a valuable concept for body weight workouts. If you do a push up without a weight vest it is usually simple. Add a long weight vest with the weights located around your stomach and then do a push up, it’s a little more difficult. Add a short vest with the weights located around your ribcage and you have muscle building resistance! This concept will be the difference in mediocre workouts and smoking hot workouts!!
When you make the decision to invest in a weight vest make sure you remember the fulcrum effect. It helps target critical core strength building muscles like the abdominal muscles (crunches and sit ups), the oblique muscles ( side bends) and spinal erectus muscles (forward bending).
Don’t rip your self off on a vest that locates the weight too low on your body. These belly-buster vests might be sufficient for working the legs, but real core strength is built with short vests and is the key to absolute top fitness.
