"When I was able to basically run through the boulder field on the way back down the mountain I knew weight vest training was something I would never stop doing. At age 47 I was feeling 25 years old as I climbed the snow-covered southwest couloir without crampons. The cardio-vascular conditioning I had developed was amazing. The 10 mile hike to base camp was no problem, so I was able to take in the whole experience without thinking of fatigue. It made the trip just that much more enjoyable. My preparation included stair climbing, running and weight walking as well as body-weight workouts. V-Max vests are short style so I was able to work my back, abdominals and obliques better. My core strength was greatly enhanced as I climbed the boulder field with little effort. We arrived at base camp about 10:30 PM, I was tired, but not wasted. I recommend Weight vest training for any backpacker who wants to increase his or her core strength and conditioning.
